Lacrosse player who murdered girlfriend in jealous rage jailed for 26 years

During the trial, jurors heard about the drunken nights out shared by the two,
both leading figures on the university lacrosse teams, which often descended
into rows and violence.

A key moment in the case came when the court was shown a police video in which
Huguely, now 24, was told that Love was dead. He had already admitted
getting into a fight with her, but appeared shocked when told she had died,
bursting into tears and insisting it could not be true.

Huguely’s defence argued this showed that he had not planned to murder his
girlfriend of two years, and urged the jury to acquit him of first degree
murder. Lawyers attempted to portray him as a “boy athlete” and “stupid
drunk” rather than a killer.

In the end, he was found guilty of the lesser charge of second degree murder,
which does not require intent.

The two students were from privileged Maryland families, leading many
commentators to highlight the heavy toll the drinking culture at the
university had taken.

On the day of the murder, Huguely had been drinking since morning, continuing
to consume alcohol as he played in a father and son golf tournament.

Onlookers said he acted inappropriately, playing wild shots and urinating on
the green in front of his father, but kept on drinking at a dinner which
followed the event and at a bar with friends before going to Love’s
apartment later in the evening.

Before Huguely was sentenced, Love’s mother Sharon sobbed as she told the
court how much she missed her daughter: “Every year that goes by, I’m
afraid I’m forgetting pieces of our life,” she said.
