Machsom: mornings at Checkpoint 300

Checkpoint 300, or the Gilo Checkpoint, blocks the road between Bethlehem and Jerusalem for Palestinians. Since the 1990s, the checkpoint has evolved from a couple of soldiers at a roadblock to a terminal complete with full body turnstiles and biometric data checking. Another node in Israel’s ‘matrix of control’ in the West Bank, many western tourists pass through the vehicle gate of the checkpoint on day trips to visit the holy sites in Bethlehem. However, very few see the experiences of Palestinian workers there in the early hours of the morning. In early 2016, I spent many mornings at this checkpoint observing and recording the treatment of Palestinian workers. Here is what I saw.
