Video: Peaceful demonstration at checkpoint leads to nightmarish response

On Thursday evening, 27th of July, Israeli Occupation Forces attacked the peaceful demonstration, which took place in front of the military checkpoint, that leads to the Shuhada Street in the occupied part of Hebron.

Around 30 demonstrators gathered to pray at 19:50 in a response to the call of the national campaign to lift the closures from the central Hebron, called “Dismantle the Ghetto”. Following the prayer, the people started chanting against the Israeli occupation and calling for support for the Palestinian people that were at the time resisting new security measures in Jerusalem.

Approximately 10 minutes after the start of chanting, the young boy placed the Palestinian flag in the checkpoint fence, to which 40 armed soldiers responded by storming out of the checkpoint and firing the sound bombs in order to disperse the demonstrators. One of these sound bombs injured an activist, Majid Abu Sbeih, who was immediately treated on the ground.

As I told the group, “The main goal of this event is to support the steadfastness and the struggle of our people in Jerusalem who are protesting the measures, which restrict their freedom of prayer”. Those measures are the surveillance cameras that were recently installed at al-Aqsa Mosque.

For the people of Hebron this issue is highly important, as it resembles in a way the situation that is in place in Ibrahimi Mosque, where not only the electronic gates and military barriers were installed after the massacre in 1994 but the mosque was also divided into two parts: one part for Palestinians and the other one for Jews.
