Britain’s national conscience has long been stained by the sickeningly  cosy relationship between the Tony Blair government and the murderous Gaddafi regime.

The evil despot was fawned over, indulged and brought in from the cold as our former Prime Minister, desperate for oil contracts, abandoned any pretence of having an ‘ethical foreign policy’.

But, even by these low standards, it’s impossible not to be appalled by the latest allegation that Labour ministers sanctioned an operation, by MI6, to deliver the Libyan rebel leader Abdel Hakim Belhadj and his pregnant wife to Gaddafi’s torturers.

The couple say they were handed first to the CIA, and then on to Libyan henchmen – who duly subjected both to horrifying ill-treatment.

If their claims are true – and ex-ministers have produced no convincing denial – it would amount to one of the darkest episodes in the life of a Labour government which already stands accused of complicity in the torture of terror suspects by the U.S.

Indeed, as the Mail reveals today, MI6 is so determined to hide the full shabby truth about what happened to Belhadj that officials intend to buy his silence with a seven-figure payout.

However, it’s not just Labour and the intelligence services which should be shamed by these squalid revelations.

For, if the Coalition persists with its chilling secret justice green paper, civil cases such as that being brought by Belhadj – who is suing for compensation – will take place behind closed doors.

A Minister would be able to declare that the evidence of how Belhadj was rendered relates to a matter of national security – and deeply disturbing accusations of State wrong-doing would be covered up.

Not only is this an affront to our treasured, hard-won principles of open justice. It would also hand a propaganda coup to our enemies.

Sadly, there is no escaping the Blair Government’s disgraceful past in Libya.

But the Coalition, which is consulting on its green paper, still has the opportunity to drop its unforgivable plan to drag Britain into the totalitarian world of secret justice. It must take it.

Banishing the bags

Since 2008, the Mail has campaigned to reduce the huge harm caused to the environment by disposable carrier bags.

The initiative is backed by an army of readers, campaign groups, responsible high street shops and the current Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister.

Yet, instead of forcing supermarkets to take action, David Cameron is giving them a chance to voluntarily reduce the 333million poisonous single-use bags being doled out every year.

The results will not be known until later this year. But what is certain is that in Wales – where supermarkets were compelled to charge 5p for each bag, and donate the proceeds to charity – usage has fallen by up to 90 per cent.

We trust Mr Cameron will take note – and know what to do if stores in England fail to put their own house in order.

A world of their own

The EU, many of whose member states are nearly bankrupt, thinks it is prudent to send £210million to China so the economic superpower can plant forests to combat ‘climate change’.

The loan is being underwritten by the politically-correct British government, which is itself £1trillion in debt and closing libraries and cutting meals on wheels services to curb public spending.

Truly, it’s impossible to conceive of a political class – in Westminster or Brussels – more detached from the real world.

You know what they say about people who smile a lot, “our Tony you just carn’t trust him” and nor should you.

about time Tony Blair was brought to justice for what he has done to us the english and for the co he keeps something not right some where but hes earned a huge pay packet for keeping friends with traitors. he is as slimy as they are

If any Labour supporter still thinks the party is there for the interests of the working man then they must be living in the last century. New Labourwell and truly betrayed the loyalty of its supporters by becoming the pawn of the USA , sacrificing hundreds of British lives in unnecessary conflicts whilst by stealth it tried its best to undermine every British institution on behalf of its other masters in Brussels. Deceit, secrecy and outright lies are the hallmark and legacy of the Blair,Brown dynasty where personal advancement and public profile were the order of the day. They betrayed every person in the land leaving massive debt but yet we see people still voting Labour, little wonder we just repeat history and fall for the same thing time and time again. Is it the media propaganda or are people just naturally stupid?

tony was a caring king of guy! What have all suckers who voted for that con man got to say now?
