Man charged over Duntroon sexual assault

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for sexually assaulting a woman within the grounds of Canberra’s Royal Military College, Duntroon.

ACT Police say a 21-year-old woman contacted police at 2am (AEST) on Thursday to report that a man known to her had entered her house and sexually assaulted her before fleeing.

Officer, assisted by Military Police, located the man at 5am within the grounds of Duntroon.

He was charged on Thursday afternoon with two counts of sexual intercourse without consent and will appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday, police said in a statement.

A defence spokesman said a member of the Australian Defence Force had been arrested and charged with alleged sexual offences involving a civilian.

“The Australian Defence Force Investigative Service is assisting the Australian Federal Police in their investigation,” he said.

“Defence is providing welfare support to the member.”

The spokesman said this matter was now before a civilian court and it would not be appropriate for defence to make further comment or speculate on the investigation, charges, court proceedings or possible civil outcomes.
