Media trespass at my home: Peter Slipper

Embattled Speaker Peter Slipper has accused media of trespassing at his house on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast and rubbing their hands on his wife’s car.

Mr Slipper stood down as speaker of parliament’s lower house pending a possible criminal investigation into claims he misused taxpayer-funded Cabcharge vouchers.

He strenuously denies the allegations, as well as civil claims he sexually harassed male staffer James Hunter Ashby.

Mr Slipper said on social networking site Twitter on Tuesday night that journalists had entered his garage and rubbed their hands over his wife’s car.

“I am told that media have trespassed at my home;entered the garage and rubbed their hands over my wife’s car etc. What about media ethics?” the tweet said.

He also hinted at a personal falling out with Opposition Leader Tony Abbott.

“I have been a good friend of Tony Abbott even when he didn’t have many. I even delivered him the key vote he needed to become leader!” Mr Slipper tweeted.

In another: “A cynical person once told me that “if you want a friend in politics, buy a dog”.

Mr Slipper quit the Liberal National Party last year to take up the speakership, amid ongoing speculation he would not win party preselection for his seat again.

Mr Abbott on Tuesday insisted he did not believe any coalition personnel were aware of the case against the former Liberal turned independent MP before details appeared in the media on Saturday.

But he admitted he could not categorically rule out the possibility that someone in the coalition had played a role in the case’s preparation.

Mr Abbott said ultimately he was “not accountable” for the actions of people outside his parliamentary team.
