Milk price cuts in UK causes disruption

Retailers and processors have until 1 August to renegotiate the cuts and further reductions proposed, the campaign called ‘Farmers for Action’ said.

The warning comes as milk tankers may be blocked from leaving various dairy farms.

Andrew Hemming, a member of ‘Farmers for Action’ campaign, refused to comment on blockades but warned that there would be a “severe disruption”.

Hemming told the state-run BBC in Scotland that farmers did not want to be pushed to the point of upsetting consumers. He also said: “If this money is not reinstated and backdated by 1 August then there will be protests and severe disruption to the supply.”

Processors and retailers have blamed the cuts on the issues that the price of cream is declining in value and that it may prevent farmers from not being able to invest in the future.

The blame follows the protest, led by over 2,000 dairy farmers which took place on 11 July, as they took to the streets of London’s Westminster with much fear that they will be thrown out of business.
