This is the moment that two men on a cigarette break narrowly escape death when a out of control fire engine smashed into a shop front.

Footage posted online show the pair throwing themselves out of the way in front of a mobile phone shop in Birmingham as the vehicle mounts the kerb and veers towards them.

It is believed that the female firefighter may have been attempting a three-point turn during a 999 call out when she lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the shop front.

Pharmacist Nadeem Nazar, 28, who saw the accident, said: ‘I was sitting there and the fire engine was coming down, sirens on.

‘She [the woman firefighter] slowed down at the junction of Trafalgar Road and attempted a three-point turn.

‘Mid-attempt she went further than expected, mounted the kerb and veered toward the shop.

‘There
were two chaps sitting on the step and she had to sound the sirens and
they dived out of the way at the last minute and she crashed into the
shop.

‘One of the lads here said she must have seen a special offer in the shop and tried to go in.’

The embarrassing accident occurred at
6 pm and according to a witness the firemen were seen ‘having a giggle’
about the ordeal at a local pub later in the evening. It was finally
removed at 9 pm.

Administrator
Charlene Pendlebury, 26, who lives nearby, said: ‘I was walking home
and I heard a bloke say “bloody women drivers” and then I saw it.

‘I
thought, how on earth did that happen? It gives women drivers a bad
name. It is a tight turn but that is ridiculous. They had to block the
whole road off.

‘There were about six or seven fire trucks all along the road and crowds of people watching, waiting to see what would happen. It must have cost so much money having all those firefighters and workers out.’

Photographer Gareth Parsons said: ‘The fire engine was turning left when coming out of a T-junction but ploughed head on into the shop. It looked like he was trying to do a three-point-turn at high speed.

‘No one was hurt but the damage to the shop looks extensive.’

Is your seatbelt on?
Good job they have a reminder for themselves on the side of the engine.

“Seriously can’t believe you have pointed out she was a woman driver etc in the way you have. Bet you wouldn’t be so negative towards women and derogatory if she was the one pulling you from a burning building.

It woulld be a man pulling me from a building, women are not strong enough and they might mess up their make up with a bit of sweat?????

Man or Woman, who cares!! It was a Fire Brigade driver who lost control of a 30 ton vehicle at low speed and nearly killed two people.
Will she be fired (no pun intended) or prosecuted for dangerous driving? Doubt it as it was a Woman had it been a man different matter.

Due to the ongoing (but harmless) sexist joke, when i read this article (which is even written by a female) i had a little inward chuckle to myself that it was a female driver. BUT, that is all it was, an amusing little aside. Nobody was seriously injured, and nobody with any sense will deem the fact she was female was the primary reason for the crash. All those berating political correctness in other news articles should realise the hypocrisy they are showing here. People really need to lighten up in this country!

Note all the red arrows on this article are men! the tag line on the title would spark a sexist pigs attention straight away. Get a grip shallow minded creatures. Regardless of man or woman. This was a close call. I doubt pointing out the sex of the driver makes any difference. I am surprised I am not seeing a ‘why is a women in the Fire Brigade anyway?’ comment.

How many accidents are caused by Men? The majority! So DM don’t be so Sexist!

i think the sign on the side of that fire engine is quite ironic

A few years ago, I was shopping in Belfast and was almost hit by a bus that was going too fast and swerved, mounting the pavement by accident. I had to dive out of the way, or I would have been killed, on my birthday no less. Anyway, I gathered myself and walked over to see the driver before they took off again, and noticed she happened to be a woman.
Anyway, at that time Translink had been told that there were not enough women bus drivers, so they introduced a well-publicised fast track recruitment scheme to up the numbers of women drivers, with free training courses (for women only) in Knott’s Corner. It seems they were willing to cut corners and put unsuitable or inexperienced people in the role, just to satisfy quotas on paper. I do not subscribe to the idea that women are worse drivers, of course it depends on the individual, not their gender, but I think this out of control fire engine may be another case of an unsuitable or unprepared person placed in a role to fill quotas.

In my experience woman are actually better drivers especially under emergency conditions.- John Banks, Eastbourne…..I wonder where your experience comes from? My experience of 30 years with emergency services an HGV class1 licence causes me to strongly disagree!
