“Syria has just considered the accredited Moroccan ambassador to Syria persona non grata,” AFP quoted Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi as saying via Twitter on Monday.
While Rabat claims that violence in Syria is the reason behind Ismail’s expulsion, some reports suggest that since the next meeting of the so-called friends of Syria is scheduled to be held in Morocco, Rabat expelled the Syrian envoy to demonstrate its anti-Assad stance ahead of the meeting.
In May, a number of Western countries, including the United States, France, Britain, Canada, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Bulgaria and Switzerland, expelled Syrian diplomats, claiming that Damascus was responsible for a massacre of 108 people in the town of Houla.
In response, Damascus, who has vehemently rejected any role in the killing, declared the countries’ ambassadors to Syria persona non grata.
Syria has been the scene of deadly unrest since mid-March, 2011 and many people, including large numbers of army and security personnel, have been killed in the violence.
The West and the Syrian opposition accuse the government of killing protesters. But Damascus blames ”outlaws, saboteurs and armed terrorist groups” for the unrest, insisting that it is being orchestrated from abroad.
