Not the Nine O’Clock News

Those who accuse media of gross dereliction of duty are almost right. A gross desertion of duty would be nearer the mark. For real news you are now obliged to browse alternative media. This leaves the old monopolies reporting on who’s getting the better of whom. Is Tory Punch ahead on points in their pretend fight with Labour Judy.

For amusement or gratification you can read yesterday’s news. The difference being today’s rapist asylum seeker has a different name from last week’s rapist asylum seeker. The 18-year old media-made celebrity is seeking treatment for her cellulite. Media’s original purpose has evaporated in the vapours of internet news. Because self-styled mainstream media no longer has a news monopoly, it now finds it no longer has a role.

Never intended to carry news, conventional media’s purpose was to censor or to disassemble and re-arrange news to condition its readership. Their news reflected the policies of the political senate. If the elite voted for war then media obligingly conditioned its readership to pick up the bill and the uniform and to get out there and fight the war. If readers were on their way to the ballot box then media was there to advise them before they placed their crosses. It worked then ~ it doesn’t now.

We do not believe it is the place of media to ‘aid and abet’ a state in escaping detection and prosecution for a serious crime against a population. By denying an entire population the knowledge of its own victimization, this act of censorship denies each individual in that country the opportunity to seek an effective remedy, whether in international courts, or elsewhere.” ~ Julian Assange.

Ever since the Oxford Gazette, the first newspaper, was published 350 years ago media’s monopoly turned saints into sinners. Looking back it is all very embarrassing, isn’t it?

Today, thanks to a broader spectrum of real news access, demonization of a foe carries much less weight. Is there any point in vilifying Hitler or Saddam Hussein, Vladimir Putin or Libya’s ousted Muammar Gadhafi if we now enjoy access to a counter perspective?

The net poses a fundamental threat not only to the authority of the government, but to all authority, because it permits people to organize, think, and influence one another without any institutional supervision whatsoever.” ~ John Seabrook. My First Flame, New Yorker, June 6, 1994.

Media’s Plan B was to filter readers’ letters so the number of ‘on message’ readers appeared to support editorial take. Spectacular fail! Unable to air an alternative opinion, the better informed abandoned the old media monopolies.

Reduced readership and plummeting advertising revenues isn’t the only bad news. A newspaper’s readership or TV channel’s audience can be likened to the nodding heads who attended Stalin’s show trials. As at a Republican or Democrat convention the only attendees are supporters of either of the two. Veteran renegade journalist John Pilger:

We’ve almost got to stop using the term mainstream. It’s a fallacy. It is actually an extreme (media). What could be more extreme than various institutions that propagate rapacious illegal war, deception about economic policies? What could be more extreme than that?
