His commitment to a plant-based, vegan diet is a significant factor contributing to his enduring success. In this article, we present concrete evidence that affirms Djokovic’s vegan diet, dispelling the misinformation perpetuated by some mainstream media outlets who reference outdated information, mainly from a 2013 book by Djokovic.

Why Novak Djokovic Embraced a Vegan Diet

Djokovic’s journey towards a vegan diet is underpinned by his relentless pursuit of peak performance. Growing up in a family of restaurant owners, his diet was laden with gluten and animal products. But as his tennis career soared, he recognized the need to overhaul his nutrition to bolster recovery and endurance during grueling matches.

In late 2010, Djokovic took a significant step by eliminating gluten and dairy from his diet. Then, in mid-2015, he resolutely chose to follow a plant-based diet. The results were spectacular, with Djokovic achieving the phenomenal feat of clinching all four major titles in succession. His passion for plant-based eating ran so deep that in 2016, he even ventured into the culinary world, opening a vegan restaurant in Monte Carlo, his residence area back then.

It’s essential to address the issue of media misinformation, which consistently references Djokovic’s dietary choices from 2013, as documented in his book “Serve to Win,” when discussing his current eating habits.

A simple Google search using the phrase “bread or crackers with avocado and tuna” as extracted from his book, will reveal numerous recent articles. These articles erroneously reference this outdated information

Yet, Djokovic’s dietary evolution has been substantial since then.

In July 2018, his then-coach, Marian Vajda, revealed to DENNÍK ŠPORT that he and his team asked Novak to incorporate animal protein into their new training regimen. Vajda, who had previously coached Djokovic from 2006 to 2017, had just returned to his coaching role at Djokovic’s request. During this period, Djokovic, who had been strictly adhering to a plant-based diet, began to include fish in his dietary routine.

However, as indicated by all the subsequent evidence, this period of reintroducing fish into his diet was relatively short-lived:

In early 2020, Novak Djokovic left little doubt when he told Graham Bensinger that he had completely eliminated animal products from his diet.

Right after the above quote, Djokovic further elaborates to Graham what he eats in a typical day. All the foods he mentions are exclusively plant-based.

2. Jelena Djokovic’s Affirmation:

In May 2021, Novak’s wife, Jelena Djokovic, disclosed to the TV channel K1 that she and Novak adhere to a vegan diet.

Novak is an even bigger perfectionist; he knows his body best, and no one can make him do something he doesn’t want. Novak did not become vegan under my influence. Novak is the best in the world; he is a champion, he is alone on the field, and no one can force him to do something. We are a team, and I need to say I did not force him to do something, nor did he push me. We explored everything together. He was the first to go vegan.

Furthermore, during his participation in the Tel Aviv Watergetn Open in September 2022, a Ynet reporter received firsthand insights into Djokovic’s dietary preferences from a hotel worker. This worker testified to the reporter that all the food ordered by Djokovic at his hotel was strictly vegan, further reinforcing the athlete’s unwavering dedication to plant-based nutrition.

4. Consistent Absence of Animal Product References:

Perhaps the most compelling proof lies in the absence of any sources since 2018 that imply Djokovic consumes any form of animal products. This absence of contrary information over a substantial period underscores the enduring nature of Djokovic’s vegan diet.
