Five people have been charged after a protest at the Sydney Opera House today, police say.

Shortly before 10am, police from The Rocks Local Area Command were alerted to a number of people trying to access the sails of the building.

Two women were arrested after allegedly refusing directions by security officers to leave the area.

They were both charged with trespass.

Two women, aged 22 and 30, and a man, aged 37, allegedly climbed the structure and a banner was unfurled on the building’s north-western sail.

The three were later taken to The Rocks police station.

They were charged with trespass and granted conditional bail.

They are due to appear in the Downing Centre Local Court on November 8.

The logging protest has reignited debate about use of Australia’s native forests, which the campaign group The Last Stand says is unsustainable.

The protest was particularly aimed at retail group Harvey Norman.
