Orica lightning fire was no hazard: EPA

A fire started by a bolt of lightning at Orica’s Newcastle chemical plant is not an environmental hazard, the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) says.

Chief environmental regulator for the agency, Mark Gifford, says Orica advised the EPA on Sunday night that a lightning strike had ignited process gas from one of its stacks.

“The highly visible flame, which was caused as a result of lightning strikes, is unusual and has only occurred due to electrical storm activity at the same time as the ammonia plants start up,” Mr Gifford said.

He said there was no resulting environmental impact and the fire had not affected Orica’s scheduled start-up process.

The plant was shut down in August after hexavalent chromium fumes leaked near more than 70 homes in the beachside suburb of Stockton, near Newcastle.

It reopened last Tuesday under strict supervision.
