Police catch NSW prison escapee

Police have recaptured one of two convicted robbers who escaped from a prison in Sydney’s west.

The prisoners were noticed missing from the jail at Parklea during a routine check about 9.30pm (AEDT) on Sunday.

Korri Schmutter, 22, and Kyle Prendergast, 20, were minimum security prisoners serving community supervision orders at Parklea’s Drug Treatment Correctional Centre.

They were serving sentences for armed robbery and were due to be released in May.

On Thursday afternoon, local police noticed a man matching Schmutter’s description walking along the Great Western Highway in nearby Kingswood.

He was arrested without incident, charged and is expected to face court for absconding.

Prendergast remains at large. He is of Pacific Islander appearance, about 172cm tall, 70-75kg, with a medium build, short black hair, and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing prison greens.

Anyone with information on Prendergast’s whereabouts, or any information relevant to the investigation, is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
