Pakistan nominates minister as premier

The nomination was announced by state-owned Pakistan Television on Thursday, AFP reported.

Makhdoom is also a member of Pakistan’s National Assembly and the leader of the ruling Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in the south of the Punjab province.

His name was selected after Zardari consulted with his coalition partners and members of the PPP.

Shahabuddin will file nomination papers on Thursday. The National Assembly will meet on Friday to elect the new prime minister.

On Tuesday, Pakistan’s Supreme Court disqualified Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani from holding office retroactive to April 26 when he was convicted of contempt of court.

The court found him guilty of failing to pursue alleged corruption charges against Zardari.
