Palestinian rally halts Sydney traffic

More than 100 pro-Palestinian protesters are marching through central Sydney, causing heavy traffic snarls.

The protest is being held to coincide with Al-Nakba, which commemorates the displacement of Palestinians in 1948.

The protesters began their march at 7pm (AEST) and will march down George, Market, Pitt and King streets before returning to Town Hall.

“Israel, USA- how many kids have you killed today?” the protesters chanted as they marched.

The NSW Supreme Court on Monday rejected a police application to stop the march because of safety concerns and the potential traffic chaos.

The rally organisers on Tuesday agreed to delay the march until 7pm to minimise the impact on peak-hour traffic and pedestrian safety.

Some buses are being diverted while others are delayed.

Passengers can use their bus tickets to catch CityRail and Sydney Ferries services until 9pm, the Transport Management Centre said in a statement.
