People protest housing crisis in France

Thousands of people have gathered in the French capital, Paris, to voice anger at the rising cost of housing and homelessness rate in France, Press TV reports.

Organizations that support homeless people scheduled the gathering in front of France’s Housing Ministry on Christmas Day to draw attention to the housing crisis in the country.

Over the past decade, homelessness in France has reportedly increased nearly 50 percent. Reports say that one out of six people in France suffers from serious housing problems.

“The government’s assistance has been cut sharply and this has made our housing situation an emergency,” said Jean Baptiste Yeraud, a spokesman for French housing advocacy organization Droit au Logement (Right to Housing).

“We are demanding the government finally implement policies based on the needs of the average person and not just those who are rich enough to own property,” he added.

There are an estimated 2.6 million empty apartments owned by rich families in France.

During the Thursday gathering, the protesters also called on the government of President Francois Hollande to come up with concrete plans to solve the housing crisis.

“Our public funds have been mismanaged and that has led to the housing crisis,” Fabrice Charleuf, an activist, said.

France, which is facing economic hardship, has imposed austerity policies that have put its citizens under more financial pressure than ever.

The eurozone’s second-largest economy also strives to reduce its public deficit, which is expected this year to be 4.4 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP) and is only expected to fall slightly next year to 4.3 percent.
