Russian PM endorses N-deal with Jordan

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has endorsed a draft agreement with Jordan on the joint construction of the Arab country’s first nuclear power plant.

Based on the agreement, Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation will assist Jordan in building a nuclear power plant.

The Atomic Energy Commission of Jordan and Rosatom subsidiary Rusatom Overseas had agreed on the project during the 58th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency in the Austrian city of Vienna on September 22.

“The construction and operation of nuclear power plants will be financed with investments attracted in the markets of Russia, Jordan and third countries,” the text of the agreement reads, Russia’s RT TV network reported on Thursday.

Jordan’s first nuclear power plant will, according to the agreement, have two reactors with the capacity of 1,000 MW each. The first one is expected to become operational in 2024 and the second one in 2026.

The joint project with Jordan will have “a positive impact on the development of the Russian nuclear industry and will provide long-term work for the nuclear industry of the country,” the Russian government says.

In January 2011, Jordan had announced a tender for the construction of the first nuclear power plant. Rosatom was named as a “preferred bidder” in October 2013.
