Police arrest final fugitive in Tokyo sarin gas attack

His arrest brings to a close the 17-year hunt but will reopen the legal
process that has ground through the courts.

In all, 189 members of the quasi-religious cult, whose name means “supreme
truth,” have been indicted for a campaign which had the ultimate aim of
overthrowing the government. Many have already completed prison terms but 12
senior members – including founder Shoko Asahara – have been sentenced to
death.

None of the executions have been carried out and legal experts believe that
the arrest of Takahashi, as well as that of fellow fugitive Naoko Kikuchi in
early June, will delay that process.
