Police kill man in Brisbane’s north

Police have shot dead a 36-year-old man at a home in Brisbane’s north.

Two detectives were leaving a Bracken Ridge house when the man pointed a gun at them, police say.

The officers were investigating property offences at the time, Queensland Police Union president Ian Leavers told reporters at the scene.

He said the detectives had finished talking to the man’s girlfriend and had completed a consensual search of the house when the man allegedly pointed a gun at them as they were leaving.

“Police produced their firearms and fired a volley of shots and two shots hit the man,” Mr Leavers said.

He was shot in the chest and stomach.

Mr Leavers said police and paramedics worked on the man but he died 45 minutes later.

Two young children were inside the house at the time of the shooting.

Mr Leavers said one detective fired at the man.

He said it was an appropriate response.

“When a firearm is produced you have to make an instant decision and if you don’t, you could end up deceased yourself,” Mr Leavers said.

He said the man was well-known to police.

A neighbour told AAP he heard the shooting.

“I was sitting inside when I heard three quick, consecutive shots,” the elderly man, who did not want to be identified, said.

“I heard a woman shout out: ‘they shot him’.”

He stepped out into his front yard to see ambulances and a woman being taken away in the back of a police vehicle.

“She looked very distressed,” he said.

Carol Biviano, who lives nearby on an adjacent street, told AAP she didn’t know the couple but often heard their fights.

“It has been a noisy household that one. There’s always fighting going on,” she said.

“I have seen cops show up there many times.”

The shooting will be subject to an internal police investigation.

Detective Superintendent Bob Hytch says the two plain-clothes officers won’t be stood down during the internal investigation.

He said the officers were assisting the police service’s ethical standards command unit.

The street has been cordoned off as a crime scene.
