Police nab US national in Islamabad

A US citizen has been arrested in the country after being found in possession of ammunition before boarding a plane, marking the second such case since May.

The detention, which took place on Friday, came after airport staff searched a US security trainer and found 15 bullets for a 9mm handgun during routine checks of a flight at Islamabad airport.

“The Airport Security Force (ASF) has handed over to us a US national after recovering a magazine and 15 bullets from him…The bullets and magazine were discovered through a scanning machine,” said Muhammad Fayaz, a police officer at the airport.

The unidentified US national was later released by a local court on personal guarantee of a Pakistani employee of the US embassy, an airport official said.

The man was residing at the US embassy in Pakistan and was set to travel from Islamabad to Abu Dhabi and onward to the United States.

The incident came after Pakistani officials arrested FBI agent Joel Cox for trying to board a civilian flight with ammunition at Karachi Airport on April 5.

US officials claim the arrested FBI agent was in Pakistan as part of a multi-agency anti-corruption program.

The arrests could open a new chapter in troubled relations between Pakistan and the United States.

In January 2011, the fatal shooting of two men by Raymond Davis, a US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) contractor, in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore sparked a diplomatic crisis between the two countries. Pakistani judicial authorities eventually freed Davis following the payment of USD 2 million as blood money to the families of the dead men.
