Work is underway to recover the bodies of two people killed in a helicopter crash in central Queensland on Thursday.
The Cairns-based chopper crashed in dense bushland at the Australian Defence Force’s (ADF) training area yesterday at Shoalwater Bay, north of Rockhampton.
The pilot and a passenger were found dead at the scene.
A 50-year-old man survived the crash and was flown to the Rockhampton hospital in a stable condition.
Police say a recovery team will be sent to the site today.
The helicopter was being leased by a consultancy company and was doing routine maintenance on radio towers.
Three investigators from the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), as well as two ADF officers, are expected to collect evidence and conduct interviews.
The owner of the chopper company, Heli Charters Australia, is also heading to the crash site today.
Rescue helicopter crewman Brad Nagy says the recovery will be an extremely difficult operation.
“The location of the scene itself, it’s extremely vegetated,” he said.
“The walk from the pinnacle down to the crash site is only about 100 to 150 metres.
“However the helicopter needs to hover just over the crash scene to guide the crew down from the pinnacle, otherwise they would get lost – it’s just that thick.
“Once they’ve established themselves at the crash site, the helicopter will then winch in all their specialist cutting and retrieval gear.
“The team will then document the site and retrieve the two deceased people still at the crash site.”
