Rhino poached at refuge where Prince William proposed

“The long-term implications of the current upsurge of elephant and rhino
poaching across Africa go far deeper than the death of one animal,” he
said. “It is about governance, corruption and cartels. It’s about
undermining new economic opportunities for communities while eroding the
national assets that form the backbone of Kenya’s tourism-based economy.”

Driving this deadly illegal trade is the sharp rise in the price of horn and
ivory, most of which finds its way to the Far East and in particular to the
nouveau riche of China.

There, rhino horn can change hands at US$60,000 (£40,000) per kilogram
(2.2lb), making it worth more than its weight in gold. With an average horn
weighing 7kg (15lb) and worth nearly half a million dollars, it is little
wonder the poachers are willing to risk their lives.

To counter the upsurge in rhino poaching, all kinds of measures are being
considered, including injecting the horns with arsenic to prevent their use
as traditional medicine in China; whether this will prove effective remains
to be seen.

The price of raw ivory has also soared in the Far East. It is now reportedly
worth in excess of US$1,500 (£1,000) a kilogram – cheaper than rhino horn,
but still lucrative enough to make poaching and smuggling a dangerous but
worthwhile occupation.

The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) is struggling to contain the poaching crisis
in what is one of Africa’s most elephant-friendly countries. In the field,
KWS rangers risk their lives every day when confronting heavily armed
poaching gangs, and there are plans to expand Kenya’s elephant population,
restoring the animals to areas where they were exterminated in the 1980s.

Despite such proposals, the KWS has been accused of failing to admit to the
scale of the problem. Conservationists were astounded in February when
Julius Kipng’etich, the head of the KWS, announced that 278 elephants had
been poached in Kenya last year. In March, when Kahindi Lekalhaile, the CEO
of Ecotourism Kenya, publicly declared that the true figure was nearly 10
times higher, he was promptly arrested.
