A 27-YEAR-OLD man dumped at a Melbourne hospital may have been shot in the groin as payback or as a warning, police say.
A man and a woman drove a bleeding Sean Edward Walker to the Sunshine Hospital late last night.
The pair only told medical staff that he was shot before they fled in a car, leaving the unconscious man in the hospital’s care.
Mr Walker underwent emergency surgery for a single gunshot wound as homicide detectives took over the investigation into the shooting.
“We’ve seen in the past cases where people have been shot in the lower limbs, potentially as a warning, and it hasn’t been fatal,” Detective Inspector John Potter said.
“But this case has the potential to be fatal. He’s in a critical condition on life support.”
Police are also examining the Brunswick resident’s past for any possible connections to the shooting, or if he had become entangled in a dispute with Middle Eastern gangs, which have been linked to similar shootings over the past two years.
Key to the investigation is Mr Walker’s whereabouts during the last 48 hours and the two people who drove him to hospital.
“Clearly they must have some thoughts about his welfare to take him to hospital,” Det Insp Potter said.
The couple were last seen driving a Mitsubishi Verada sedan that is light in colour, possibly silver, with a sunroof and spoiler.
