Russia can’t be intimidated: Official

Russia’s Upper House speaker and former deputy prime minister has slammed sanctions imposed by the United States against Russian government officials.

Valentina Matviyenko told the Interfax news agency on Monday that the White House sanctions on her and ten other Russian, Crimean and Ukrainian individuals were an “unprecedented” decision that had not even been made during the Cold War.

“This is political blackmail… the US government knows that I have no accounts, assets or property abroad,” Matviyenko stated.

“I have always defended and will further defend Russia’s national interests, not the geopolitical interests of the West. Nobody can intimidate us,” the Russian official added.

On Monday, US President Barack Obama issued an executive order that imposes sanctions on 11 Russian, Crimean, and Ukrainian individuals for “contributing to the situation in Ukraine.”

Obama’s order freezes any assets of the officials that are inside the United States or “hereafter come within the United States.” The order also bans the individuals from travelling to the United States.

The sanctions came after nearly 97 percent of voters in Crimea voted on March 16 to secede from Ukraine in favor of joining Russia.

The imposition of sanctions by the White House also sparked anger among other Russian officials with Yelena Mizulina, a member of the Duma, calling the sanctions “a rude violation” of her rights as a citizen and a politician.

Meanwhile, Vladislav Surkov, a senior adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, said being placed on the US sanctions list was a great honor for him.

Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin has also responded to the move with irony.

Rogozin stated in a message posted on Twitter that he is finally getting worldwide recognition.

The EU has also imposed sanctions on 21 individuals, including three senior Russian commanders, the prime minister of Crimea, a deputy speaker of the Duma and other senior officials.
