Russian jet with 46 on-board missing

The airplane from the Russian manufacturer Sukhoi lost contact with air traffic controllers while flying over mountains around the Bogor area in western Indonesia on Wednesday.

Authorities are uncertain whether it has crashed. A search and rescue team was dispatched to look for the jet, which took off from an airport in Jakarta at 7:00 GMT.

All radio contact was lost after the pilots requested permission to descend from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet, air traffic controllers said.

The plane was carrying Indonesian airline and aviation representatives, as well as journalists and Russian Embassy officials.

The Superjet, a mid-range airliner that can carry up to 100 people, is crucial to Russia’s hopes of becoming a major player in the modern aviation market.

The demonstration flight in Jakarta was part of an Asian tour to promote the aircraft. Sukhoi Superjet 100 had been to Myanmar, Pakistan and Kazakhstan, and was due to visit Laos and Vietnam after Indonesia.
