‘Selena Bieber’ Twitter Fans Hijack Miley Cyrus’s Engagement News

The news about pop singer Miley Cyrus and Hunger Games actor Liam Hemsworth engagement on Wednesday instantly became the number one worldwide trending topic on Twitter. But it didn’t take long for fans of another celebrity couple to quickly steal the limelight.

While the topic “Miley Hemsworth” sat comfortably atop Twitter’s top 10 trends, “Selena Bieber” sneaked its way into the list. That topic combines the names of pop stars Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, who are dating but have not announced they’re engaged.

The wrath of “Miley Hemsworth” lovers soon descended upon “Selena Bieber” fans. The following tweets highlight the engagement news as well as the “Selena Bieber” hijack and reactions:

That tweet from Cyrus has been retweeted 18,870 times as of 10:50 a.m. ET on Wednesday. Cyrus, who is 19 and has been dating 22-year-old Hemsworth for three years, told People magazine that her finance proposed to her with a 3.5-carat diamond ring on May 31.

A gamer named Mihai surprised his girlfriend, Miruna, with a virtual ring in the Crime City mafia video game on Google+.

Funzio, makers of the massively multiplayer online role-playing game, helped Mihai pull off the proposal. Miruna found the ring in her character’s inventory and said yes.
