Shooting victim thought police were home invaders

A TEENAGER shot in the stomach by police has told his family he intended to attack the officers with a curtain rod because he believed they were home invaders, it was reported last night.

Police arrived at the home of 19-year-old Julian McMaster about 1am yesterday morning to investigate reports a woman had been threatened with a knife during a home invasion at Colyton in Sydney’s west.

When the officers arrived, the knife-wielding assailants had fled, but they discovered Mr McMaster still brandishing the curtain rod. Police reportedly yelled out to the victim to “put it down, put it down”.

“He went to put it down, but he (paused) and they shot him,” a female witness said.

He was rushed to Westmead Hospital where he underwent surgery to his stomach and was last night in a stable condition.

Mr McMaster’s mother said her son had defended his family from the attackers. “It wasn’t his fault. He was trying to protect his sister and his little brothers,” she told the Seven Network.

The teen yesterday told family he would have attacked the officers with the curtain rod, but did not realise they were police until after he had been shot in the stomach, the Seven report said.

One of the officers was equipped with a Taser stun gun and the one who fired at the victim had three years’ experience in the police force.

“They’re traumatised by this incident,” NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Denis Clifford said. “I’d suggest they didn’t set out to shoot someone last night.”

Mr McMaster’s uncle, John Karakizos, dismissed suggestions his nephew may have been carrying a knife, telling the Nine Network he was “a quiet kid”, not prone to violence and who had never received police attention.

A neighbour said a car was firebombed about a year ago in the property next door. “Otherwise it’s pretty peaceful,” the man said.

Police will conduct an investigation overseen by the Professional Standards Command.
