Swan heartened by retail sales figures

Treasurer Wayne Swan has been heartened by the latest retail spending figures, saying they are more evidence of a resilient Australian economy.

Retail spending grew by a larger than expected 0.5 per cent in May to $21.3 billion, seasonally adjusted, data issued on Wednesday shows.

Mr Swan said spending was reasonably broad-based and more good news after the record 27.3 per cent monthly increase in dwelling approvals in data released on Tuesday.

“It was heartening to see more evidence of the resilience of our economy in the face of global turbulence,” he said in a brief statement.

“Despite today’s positive result, we know that parts of our retail sector remain under pressure from changing consumer preferences and the more cautious consumer behaviour that we’ve seen since the GFC.”

But while there are challenges in parts of the economy, it had the best combination of impressive growth, low unemployment, a record pipeline of investment, contained inflation and low interest rates, Mr Swan said.
