Silvio Berlusconi again hints at political comeback

As a result a clearly embarrassed Berlusconi issued a statement which read: “In
the interview that appeared in Bild, the idea of a change of name from
People of Freedom to Forza Italia was mistaken because, as is logical and
evident, it is not a decision taken, just an idea, a proposal to talk about
and assess at the appropriate venues.”

In the same interview he also described how he had changed the face of Italian
history. “My entry into politics 18 years ago saved Italy from
Communism, that is a fact that I am very proud of,” he said.

“I am the only leader to have had excellent relationships with the
leaders of the United States and Russia at the same time and the strength of
that relationship has helped peace and security in the world.”

Berlusconi has insisted that voters would flock to him if he returned to fight
the 2013 general election but a survey in Repubblica newspaper painted a
different picture with 54% of those asked saying they felt he had had a “negative”
impact on Italy while only 13% described his career as “positive”.

The media tycoon has been at the centre of sleaze allegations in recent years
and is currently on trial accused of paying for sex with underage belly
dancer Karima
El Mahroug
when she was 17 years old at one of his infamous bunga
bunga parties.

He is also said to have abused his position as prime minister by then
deliberately lying about her, describing her as the ”grand daughter of
Hosni Mubarak” and securing her release from police custody when she was
arrested in 2010 for theft.

Both of them deny anything improper took place at his parties and Berlusconi
once again used the Bild interview to hit out at prosecutors saying:”It’s a
campaign of defamation by the magistrates, a part of whom are leftwing. The
girls just danced, like they do in all the discos around the world.”

In a separate development, pressure
is also mounting on Berlusconi favourite Nicole Minetti
, an
Anglo-Italian former dental hygienist turned TV star, to step down from her
position as a regional councillor with his party in Milan.

She is also currently on trial accused with two others, show business agent
Lele Mora and TV news anchorman Emilio Fede, of recruiting the women for
Berlusconi’s parties and officials want her out of the way to smooth over
his campaign for prime minister.
