Teenage surf lifesaver to be farewelled

A teenager who drowned during a surf lifesaving competition is to be farewelled at a funeral on the Sunshine Coast on Thursday.

Matthew Barclay, 14, drowned while competing in an under-15 board race at the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships at Kurrawa Beach on March 28.

He was the third teenager to die during national championships at the same beach.

Family, friends and members of the surf lifesaving community will gather at 11am (AEST) at the Caloundra church where Matthew was baptised.

Surf Life Saving Queensland president and Maroochydore club life member Ralph Devlin says he expects a large turnout from local and interstate surf lifesavers.

“It will be a very sad day for the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club and for the Sunshine Coast community,” he told AAP.

“But it will also be a wonderful celebration of Matthew’s life and his dedication to lifesaving ideals.”
