The Australian military’s telecommunications systems will be transformed under a $1.1 billion contract awarded to Telstra.

Signed today, the 6.5-year contract is part of an upgrade of Defence’s communication technology.

It will allow battleground communications to be better integrated with satellite networks and traditional fixed-line phones.

Also included will be the greater use of advanced video conferencing, tablet computers and smartphones, enabling troops and their commanders to better communicate with bases, operational command, defence headquarters and with allies around the world.

The communications network will link 430 sites in Australia and support 100,000 users in Australia and overseas.

It will be completed in mid 2016.

It is the largest project ever undertaken by Telstra for a customer, and will create 350 new jobs across Australia.
