You would hope and pray that the car in the first photograph has just stopped.

In fact its driver, accompanied by his wife and young son, continues blithely over the level crossing – seemingly oblivious to the train ploughing towards his vehicle.

Startling CCTV footage shows the car racing across the train’s path with a split-second  to spare.

It makes it to the other side just as the train hurtles through the crossing, outside Llangadog station near Llandeilo in Wales. The driver, who has not been named, admitted dangerous driving, claiming he had not seen the flashing lights or noticed other cars waiting at the crossing.

He was given a 12-month suspended sentence, disqualified from driving and fined £722. The footage was released by Network Rail to warn of the dangers of taking unnecessary risks at level crossings.

The court heard that his wife was left so traumatised by the incident in 2006 they had to move to a nearby town.

In March this year Network Rail was fined £1m after being found guilty of criminal negligence which led to the deaths
of two teenage girls at a level crossing in 2005.

Olivia Bazlington and Charlotte
Thompson were killed at Elsenham station in Essex when they crossed the
tracks and were hit by a train.

A
damming risk assessment taken four years earlier had highlighted the
dangers of leaving the pedestrian gate at the station unlocked.

Judge David Turner QC, sentencing at Chelmsford Crown Court, ordered Network Rail to pay the large fine and £60,000 costs.

He said: ‘I have concluded that there
was a clear history of inadequate risk assessment and a failure to heed
and act upon relevant information.

‘There was a consistent failure to
take timely remedial action – a consistent underplaying that this
crossing was being regularly misused.

‘Warnings went unheeded, data insufficiently appraised and critical questions went unasked and unanswered.

‘Remedial action was unsatisfactorily delayed.’

Last year there were six deaths and over 300 near misses at level crossings.

How can health and safety rules stop 25 firemen from entering 3 feet of water but yet allow a rail network to have an open crossing where this type of thing can happen ? It also doesn’t seem to apply anywhere where trains are concerned as they allow them to pack them with standing passengers on high speed trains which in the event of having to stop suddenly or an accident would be highly dangerous.
It seems the health and safety rules are very selective.

He said he didn’t notice the lights or other cars waiting at the crossing. He must have been half blind to have missed the giant train metres away from the car as well…

Surely this is NEAR HIT! … near miss would be that it hit, but nearly missed it.

———- It’s just a another milestone in the further breakdown of the English language by the British media. For years now the media has reported ‘an Air Miss’, a CAA definition of an air incident when action had to be taken to avoid a collision, as ‘a near miss’. This has been reported for so long that the meaningless expression ‘near miss’ is now accepted as having the opposite meaning, i.e. ‘a close shave. See also the DM habitually using a spell checker instead of proof reading. Their, there and they’re are all interchangeable, likewise to, too and two and most frequently your instead of you’re.

Who dares win , now that’s what you call a driver .

Judging by the fact he was married with a young child, he wasn’t your average boy racer.
The type of car has nothing to do with how bad or stupid the driver is. My fiancé and I have a Corsa – it’s a nice little car and neither of us would ever consider doing anything so stupid. I’ve also seen a few middle aged and elderly driving Corsas. For some people it’s the only car they can afford and they’re good little runners.

I would have watched the video but I don’t want 30 secs of a pointless advert DM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

———————————————————————But you don’t mind having a free to view website. How do you imagine this site remains free?

The solution to these incidents is easy……instead of flashing lights install fixed red lights.
How many people ignore traffic lights?

Surely this is NEAR HIT! … near miss would be that it hit, but nearly missed it.

Video has been on youtube since 2009.
