Qantas will sack about 400 workers from across its heavy maintenance bases.
The airline has confirmed the workers will be axed but a spokeswoman says it’s uncertain which of the three bases – Avalon and Tullamarine in Victoria, and Brisbane – will shed the jobs.
The spokeswoman says the decision will be made within weeks.
“The significant reduction of maintenance required on our aircraft means we do not need three separate maintenance bases,” she said.
“We are continuing to assess various options and expect to make a decision by mid-May.”
But the Herald Sun reported on Tuesday the jobs will be cut from the Tullamarine maintenance base, with another 660 workers at Avalon not expected to keep their jobs beyond two years.
