Hundreds of classic red telephone boxes, which normally see a paint brush only once every ten years, are being glossed up for the Olympic Games.
BT is splashing out 1,500 litres of red paint on more than 400 cast-iron kiosks in London and Weymouth, Dorset, the venue for the Olympic sailing.
‘We know people are going to be using their mobiles and smartphones, but it is still important that the boxes we have look their best,’ said a BT spokesman.
BT is splashing out on the paint to spruce up the iconic red phone boxes and will be repairing more than 1,000 of the more modern grey ones
‘They are iconic symbols of Britishness – like the double-decker bus and post box – and as such will attract a lot of attention from visitors.’
BT is also repairing and restoring 1,300 of its modern grey-coloured boxes.
The telecoms giant says it intends to keep up a continuous cleaning programme until September at the end of the Paralympics, which follow the Olympics.
BT admits that the boxes will not play the same practical role as they did when Britain last staged the Olympics in 1948.
Then, the organising committee commandeered boxes along the route of the marathon so that the results department could be kept informed of runners’ locations.
The 77-year-old red boxes were rolled out for the Silver Jubilee of King George V in 1935.
The design reached its peak of popularity in 1980 when there were 70,000 red boxes in Britain. Many of them were sold off after BT was privatised in 1984.
Britain now has 51,500 telephone kiosks, 11,000 of which are the traditional red ones.
The advent of the mobile phone has since seen usage fall dramatically – plummeting by 80 per cent in the past five years alone.

Funny how they’re now iconic and they want to be seen to care about them… Why couldn’t they realise that back when they trashed them all to bring in the rubbish new ones?

What will they do about the smell once you get inside? Urine, disinfectant and cigarette smoke.

The red ones should be given listed status and BT made to keep them clean and painted some are left unpainted. Councils should paint them regularly and send BT the bills.
