The Hierarchy of Weaponry

As the days continue to darken for our people and the world appears to close in around us, we could be excused for assuming that our situation has become hopeless. We could be excused for thinking that we are powerless, without anything left in our arsenal to fight back with.

But we mortals can become so riveted by the blinding lights which fix our gaze that we can overlook the potency of the things we already possess right in our very hands.

Our mind is undoubtedly our greatest weapon. It is the well from which all else springs – a weapon that produces weapons.

Determination, the will to live, courage, passion, hope, loyalty, love . . . all of these things can be considered weapons. They are useful. They allow us to get things done.

The list of such weapons that our mind provides for us is almost endless.

But as mighty as both our minds and the above-mentioned elements may be, this commentary is not about them. It is instead about the two most powerful weapons that our mind has ever produced in our entire existence on this planet: ideas, and the words used to express ideas.

What we are talking about here is a hierarchy – a hierarchy of weaponry. And at the very top of this hierarchy, ruling absolutely supreme, are ideas and words.

Ideas and words have driven virtually every single human endeavour and accomplishment throughout the ages. They shift the tectonic plates upon which almost everything related to human existence rests. Indeed, even on an individual level, ideas and words can make or break a person’s life.

The rise of nations, empires and religions; the forging of ethnic and national identities; the birth of inventions and history-changing events – all of these have come about because of ideas and the words used to express them.

Ideas have unhinged the gates of empires.”
– Paul Harris

There is one thing stronger than all the armies in the world, and that is an idea whose time has come.”
– Victor Hugo

Upon consideration it seems so obvious, and yet at the same time one gets the impression that this principle is somewhat overlooked. In fact, I would go so far as to suggest that we sorely fail to see ideas and words as actual weapons and the mighty potential they truly possess.

We absolutely must learn to see these two elements as armaments and wield them as such.

After all, one could possess the most lethal array of martial weapons in their very own home, but of what use would they be should an intruder enter that person’s home if the homeowner merely sees his weapons as adornments?

Ideas and words: we need both. For even the most profound idea that sits unarticulated is of no use to anyone. Likewise, words that fail to deliver the spark of the idea produce nothing. But forge just the right combination of these two elements together into one solid object and you may well find yourself holding the very Hammer of Thunder itself.

For just as the swordsmiths of old laboured in the art of metallurgy to find precisely the right blend of alloys which could forge the perfect blade, so too an exceptional idea expressed with the right choice of words can be wielded as an almighty weapon.

An exceptional idea or strategy is far better than an ordinary one. But try to sell that exceptional idea or strategy by using an ill-suited delivery of words, and you greatly undermine its worth.

You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can’t get them across, your ideas won’t get you anywhere.”
– Lee Iacocca

The ability to express an idea is well nigh as important as the idea itself.”
– Anon

We often refuse to accept an idea merely because the tone of voice in which it has been expressed is unsympathetic to us.”
– Friedrich Nietzsche

Ideas and words: the two are infinitely more powerful than any gun, bomb or tank could ever be. In fact, with the exception of an entire nuclear arsenal, they are more powerful than any weapons system ever to have been deployed on the field of battle.

They cost nothing, are instantly available at our beck and call, require no maintenance or upkeep, and can be upgraded at any time to any degree we see fit. They are essentially invisible, can be carried anywhere at any time, and can be deployed at any time in any location, in almost any manner we choose.

A gun alone has never conquered a people, an army by itself never carved out an empire; only the ideas and the words used to express them have ever driven soldiers forward in the first place.

Military weapons such as guns, bombs and tanks – these are the lowest, most base, even contemptible weapons ever to have been devised by man. Sadly nonetheless, they are absolutely necessary in our world, and only a fool would ever dismiss their importance.

But ideas and words are totally devoid of the limitations and encumbrances of military hardware, requiring no resupply or logistics base. They weigh nothing, are undetectable, and adaptable to virtually any situation.

They have changed the world in the past and will do so again.

Ideas and the words used to express them. If we as a people hope to escape through the closing window of opportunity that now looms before us, we absolutely must realize the full potential of these two almighty weapons. We must learn and perfect the art of blending together the most potent of ideas with the most artful of words. For only then can we hope to forge and wield the blades that will enable us to cut through the chains that currently enslave our people, our lands and our future.

We must fully appreciate the world-changing power of these two elements and master them like never before in our history.

We must commit to both of of these elements with the devotion and skill of the swordsmiths of old in order to fashion that perfect-edged blade by striking the anvil of conviction with the hammer of resolve.
