TWO teenagers were arrested today over their involvement in up to 13 fires in the Blue Mountains over the past five days.

A number of crude home made incendiary devices were used in some of the blazes according to police.

“We believe this pair are just two of a number of people who are staring fires in the area,” said Acting Superintendent Robert velar.

“They are currently being interviewed and we expect to lay charges later in the day.”

Superintendent Vellar were confident the pair aged nineteen and thirteen were responsible for a number of the fires but not necessarily all of them.

“We believe the pair were acting together but are not part of a larger group.

“They are two silly young people experimenting with chemicals.”

Superintendent Vellar said the actions of firebugs not only put home owners at risk but members of the Rural Fire Brigade who have to fight the blazes.

The first of the fires began on Sunday, with a number of other blazes occurring throughout the week.

Officers from the Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW battled the blazes sparing any property from damage.

There were no evacuations during the fires and no report of any injuries or death.

Police believe the fires are the work of several firebugs and are continuing their investigations to identify any other people involved.

Members of the community are urged to remain vigilant when it comes to fire safety and report any suspicious activity.

Anyone with information about the suspicious blazes or the culprits is urged to contact police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Acting Superintendent Robert Vella will address the media on the arrests outside Katoomba Police Station at 1:45pm today.
