UK: Blair Cameron links revealed

Cameron whose Conservative Party traditionally deems Labour as an arch-foe has held at least eight secret conversations with Blair, seeking his advice every three months on the average.

This comes as Blair is also advising Labour leader Ed Miliband on a variety of policy matters.

Blair also visited Cameron’s official country residence of Chequers last July while the PM’s office kept a lid over the meeting.

While formerly officials acknowledged Blair occasionally advises Cameron on foreign affairs as the UN Middle East Envoy, informed sources revealed the advice actually goes far beyond and into the government policies on public and civil services reform and even the economy and the euro crisis.

“They have a lot to talk about,” The Daily Mail quoted a senior source as saying.

“It is quite a special relationship between one Prime Minister and another. Who else knows what you’re going through? They ostensibly talk about the Middle East but when you’ve got him on the phone it is natural to talk politics,” the source added.

Meanwhile, the connections between Cameron and Blair are not limited to themselves as their ministers have been also in contact.

Blair has reportedly held talks with senior government ministers, including with the recently departed Downing Street director of strategy Steve Hilton.

This is while, Cameron turned out to have met Blair’s senior education aide Lord Adonis at Downing Street on Monday in a meeting that the PM tried to keep secret.

The revelations can spell serious trouble for Cameron as Conservative backbenchers are already worried that he is heeding Liberal Democrats advice on the coalition government’s policy too much.

Conservatives would especially remember Cameron’s description of himself as an “heir to Blair” during the 2005 Tory leadership contest.
