UK fails on green investment

John Ashton, special Representative for Climate Change at the UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), warned on Friday that the failure to deal with climate change would escalate hazardous problems such as water and food insecurity.

The envoy of the British government’s climate change stressed that failure in taking more action to invest in a low carbon economy, is becoming a threat to the future “prosperity and security” of many Britons.

John Ashton, who has recently stepped down from his post at the Foreign Office, told UK MPs that Britain was at risk as the country fell behind on investment in energy efficiency and clean energy.

This would eventually make it more difficult to reach global targets of limiting global warming to 2C.

“Failure to deal with climate change would amplify already dangerous stresses arising from food, water and energy insecurity,” Ashton said addressing the energy and climate change select committee.

“This potentially unmanageable combination of stresses poses a systemic risk to the security and prosperity of our country”, he added.

Ashton also told MPs that the UK was falling behind important economic competitors such as Korea, China, and Japan in some of the vast future industries such as offshore wind energy and carbon capture.
