UK govt. cuts spell hunger for pupils

Experts say that despite evidence of increasing demand, the cuts put many vulnerable children at risk of going to school hungry and not being able to focus in lessons.

Sharon Hodgson, Labour MP and shadow minister for children and families, made requests under freedom of information law to 128 local authorities and found a 40 percent decrease in the number of school breakfast facilities.

The Essex county council said schools within the county had 219 breakfast clubs in schools in 2011, but only 169 this year. In addition, schools in Surrey gave 2,870 children breakfast last year, compared to only 1,200 in 2012.

“That 40% of councils we know about are seeing numbers falling is extremely worrying. For some children, their free school meals through the week may be the only good meal they get, and we know that hungry children struggle to concentrate in class,” Hodgson said.

Many more schools are reporting that the breakfast services for pupils are being used by less fortunate families, who are unable to afford enough food at home.
