‘UK Labour out of touch with public’

Shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan, who is a Muslim, said Labour “didn’t give the impression that we were on the side of the British public” and went “out of order” for failing to listen to ethnic minorities including the women and young people in the Muslim community.

“When you become complacent, arrogant, out of touch, you get punished for it,” shadow justice secretary Sadiq Khan told The Independent on Sunday.

“We have got to show them respect. You have got to at least do them the courtesy of knocking on their door and having a conversation, and we didn’t do that,” he added.

Sadiq Khan further said as a result of the party’s arrogance it got “hammered” in the Bradford East by-election in March when George Galloway, from Respect party, defeated Labour in its stronghold by a 10,000 vote majority.

“[Galloway won by] telling people that they were important. He was reaching out to parts of the community that hadn’t been touched by the Labour Party or anybody else, ever,” he added.

Sadiq Khan also warned that the Labour party has a plan for future, yet it should be on its guard against smaller parties including the Greens, the SNP and Respect party which could inflict more defeat on Labour.
