‘US terrorizes anti-NATO protesters’

“I think what we saw on the streets of Chicago is a prime example that the reason we have these large militaries and these police states is because they see their own people as the biggest threat,” the Indypendent Newspaper’s Arun Gupta told Press TV from Chicago, where protests were held during the two-day NATO summit this week.

Gupta condemned city and government officials for using intimidating tactics on peaceful protesters, saying that a constant drumbeat of fear is carried out by politicians, the media and police departments.

“The police presence was absolutely massive today. Thousands of police often on the sites, there would be 100 or more riot police, and all these shields, gear wielding these huge wooden truncheons for a completely peaceful march. It was a show of intimidation,” Gupta said.

Critics also call foul-play in the arrest of three Occupy activists charged for allegedly plotting an attack on the US Presidential campaign headquartered in Chicago.

“The three individuals…it looks like a case of entrapment by the federal authorities, and it follows two weeks after another case that certainly seems to be entrapment, that the city of Cleveland where five young men allegedly were conspiring to blow up a bridge,” Gupta said.

“The FBI, the government, basically sets up a plot that lures people into it and then foils its own plot. This is how the government has been acting for many years,” Gupta added.

On Saturday, charges were filed against three Occupy activists, Jared Chase, Brent Betterly, and Brian Jacob Church, including possession of explosives or incendiary devices, material support for terrorism, and conspiracy.

Anti-Wall Street demonstrators have also used the summit as an opportunity to protest against the grim economic situation and excessive corporate influence in the country.

The 25th NATO summit began on Sunday while thousands of demonstrators protesting against the Western wars in Afghanistan and elsewhere marched through downtown Chicago.

Nearly two dozen peaceful anti-NATO protesters have already been arrested over the past weeks.
