Verizon commits to backing a 911-by-text-message initiative

Starting in 2013, certain Verizon customers will be able to text 911 for emergency assistance

The next time you have an emergency, could help be a text message away? Perhaps — mobile carrier Verizon has signed on to an eagerly anticipated FCC plan to allow users to text 911 in case of emergency.

The functionality is currently being put into place and won’t be operational until 2013. And even then, the feature will be limited to select cities. Verizon is partnering with Telecommunication Systems, a Maryland company, to provide the infrastructure for the SMS-to-911 service.

While texting 911 instead of calling isn’t right for everybody, it does have a number of beneficial uses. Most obviously, it would be helpful if you are ever not in the position to use your voice, either out of fear for your safety or a physical inability to do so.
