Vladimir Putin weighs in to Ukraine Yulia Tymoshenko dispute

He added: “I follow the principle of the International Olympic Committee
that sport is outside politics.”

Ukraine denounced the threatened EU boycott of Euro 2012 as a “destructive”
attempt to politicise sport.

“We view as destructive attempts to politicise sporting events, which
since ancient times have played a paramount role in improving understanding
and agreement between nations,” the Ukrainian foreign ministry said in
statement.

Mrs Tymoshenko, 51, was sentenced to seven years behind bars in October for
alleged abuse of office over a natural gas deal which she signed with
Russia. She suffers from acute back pain, and claimed last month that her
condition was aggravated when she was roughed up by prison guards who tried
to force her to to have treatment in a clinic in Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine,
near the prison where she is held.

Russia, which is trying to negotiate a customs union with Ukraine and has been
wrangling with Kiev over gas supplies, has taken a carrot and stick attitude
toward its former Soviet neighbour in recent years.

Mr Putin’s remarks signalled support for Ukraine’s president, Viktor
Yanukovych, who Mrs Tymoshenko’s supporters accuse of orchestrating her
prosecution. Mr Yanukovych’s team is fighting a rearguard action to prevent
Euro 2012 turning into a PR fiasco for his government.

The Kremlin is keen to distance politics from sport in case it comes under
fire for backsliding on democracy when it hosts the Winter Olympics in 2014,
and the football World Cup in 2018.

However, Moscow has also issued statements expressing concern over Mrs
Tymoshenko’s health, and Mr Putin provocatively suggested yesterday that she
could be sent for treatment in a Russian clinic.

Ukrainian prosecutors said that the law did not allow for a prisoner to be
sent abroad for medical care.

German specialists, who say Mrs Tymoshenko has a herniated spinal disc, have
also offered to treat the politician, who has been on hunger strike since
she was allegedly assaulted on April 20.
