Warhol self-portrait tops Sotheby’s sale

The portrait of the leading American artist was the top selling artwork among 300 other paintings, photographs and furniture from the collection of Sachs, which fetched more than USD 65.5 million, Reuters reported.

“Self Portrait (Fright Wig), done by Warhol in 1986, sold for almost USD 8.5 million, more than double its pre-sale estimate,” Sotheby’s said on Wednesday.

Another painting by Warhol, Flowers, which had been in the collection since it was purchased in 1979, sold for almost USD 6 million.

Heir to the Opel car dynasty and a well-known jet-setter, Sachs committed suicide in 2011 at the age of 78.

He was a life-long friend of Warhol and presented the artist’s first exhibition in Europe in Hamburg in 1972.

Warhol was a painter, filmmaker, author, and a leading figure in the Pop Art movement, who exhibited his works around the world throughout the 1970s and 1980s.

The US artist died in 1987 following a gall bladder operation in a New York hospital.
