This is the kind of damage old nets do on a daily basis. Every type of marine life can be caught up and killed in nets, long after they are lost or discarded in the water. Called ghost nets, they continue to catch up sea life and unfortunately, rescues like this are few and far between. Still, it is encouraging to see a rescue like this occur, especially for a species like the whale shark that is holding a precarious spot as a Vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List.
