Because more and more people use Facebook as a “news source”, the influence of this social media platform is becoming more than just an old social media network.

A surprising 63% of the 2,000 American Facebook users surveyed get their news updates from their Facebook NewsFeed.

Because this statistic puts the social media giant in direct competition with Google, Tom Stocky, vice president of the search department at Facebook, recently published a change to their search capabilities that allows “users can now find personalized suggestions from news sources, fan pages, in addition to posts from family and friends or accounts connected to a user.”

Search FYI is a platform being used by Facebook to capture the 1.5 billion searches per day and over 2 trillion posts in their index, the company has enhanced their knowledge of their users.

“Personalized search suggestions” will appear in the search box as the user types so they “can follow popular stories as they unfold.”

What friends on Facebook are posting is also key to this change; however there is a catch. Only “the most recent, relevant public posts” will be displayed.

When a post goes “viral” on Facebook, algorithms will thrust this post and topic into the “interesting public conversation” category so that anyone on the social networking site can access the post to comment in the thread.

To help sift through all the chatter, Facebook offers “an aggregate overview of sentiment” so users can decide if they want to get involved with the conversation.

But if a Facebook user does not want their posts shared with the public through Search FYI, they must change their privacy settings via the shortcut button on the website, or “more” button via smartphone apps.

Stocky told the press that Facebook algorithms “proactively remind” users who they have shared with before. This “upgrade” will allow for more information about the source of the post and relevance of the post to the keyword search in the query.

The days of public posting in the traditional sense are gone since these changes restrict those who are not connected to you from seeing your publicly posted posts.

Search history of users will be made public, which changes how Facebook could be classified, and primes them for direct competition with Google.
Utilizing the Trending Topics feature technology, the social media platform can modify itself to be a “real time discovery engine for news consumers.
