Without providing any evidence, the White House claimed the alleged “potential preparations” by Syrian government forces were similar to an incident in April in Khan Shaikhun, that prompted a session of the UN Security Council, a Security Council that opted for an investigation that never manifested, additional U.S. sanctions against Syria, calls for an OPCW probe that never manifested, and U.S. cruise missile attacks against Syrian military forces despite lack of evidence ofra legal mandate, prompting Russia to suspend the U.S.-Russian security hotline for Syria.

In a statement late Monday, from White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer, the White House warned Syrian President Bashar al-Assad that if government forces do carry out another chemical attack, then “he and his military will pay a heavy price.” As in other incidents, there was posturing and positioning but no specific information or evidence was presented about the alleged preparations.

However, the before the fact sentencing of the purported, potential war criminals was underpinned further when U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley wrote on Twitter that any further attacks against Syrian civilians “will be blamed on Assad, but also on Russia and Iran who support him killing his own people.”

80 people died in the incident in Khan Shaykhun on April 4. Ironically, the purported “evidence” provided to the French government was, provided by “journalists” without a chain of evidence that would stand, even in a city court. The French government claimed that sarin gas was used along with a stabilizer known as hexamine, and that the same manufacturing process was used for a 2013 chemical attack, also attributed to the Syrian government.

The claim about the manufacturing process that was identical with the one used for the sarin that was used during the August 2013 attack in East Ghouta was particularly revealing. An in depth investigation conducted by nsnbc international documented the chain of command, the orders that led to the attack, and identified the field commander who gave the final and direct order as Zahran Alloush.

A senior UN official stressed that Syria was not involved in the attack, but his concerns were drowned out by political posturing, positioning, and propaganda. Finally, it should also be noted that nsnbc international, in the two month leading up to the attack in August 2013, warned in three articles that the attack was planned and in its preparatory stages.
