Jews in the United Kingdom were persecution from arrival in 1066 to Full Expulsion for money changing scams and usury interest in 1290. Not until 1494 did any return but they started trickling back in and this time became more and more integrated with the powerful using loans until they received formal emancipation 364 years later in 1858 and became today the 5th largest Jewish nation in the world.

A few Jews lived in England (80-1066 A.D.), but William the Conqueror arrived in England in 1066 and encouraged Jewish merchants from northern France & Germany to move to England. They served as special moneylenders (since it was forbidden for Christians) and established communities in London, York, Bristol, Canterbury. Until 1177 only one Jewish cemetery was allowed to be established in London. Disputes over scams and excessive interest were growing from 1087-1100. But Henry I (1100-1135) granted the Jewish moneylenders a charter of liberties. The first record of Jews in Oxford is 1141 when they tried to fix who would win the throne, and in 1144, the first blood libel charge of ritual murder of a Christian child named William was brought against the Jews of Norwich for torturing and draining the child’s blood for the Passover Seder, and eventually killing and burying him. Similar case happened in Gloucester (in 1168), Bury St. Edmunds (1181), Bristol (before 1183) and Winchester (1192). The anger built across much of England and in 1189 became riots in York against the Jewish money changers and some were killed. After Richard I left to join the Crusade in 1190, riots began throughout England and a mix of Crusaders, barons, clergymen, and locals burned several Jewish houses in York and entered the castle and the cathedral and took the money changers records of debts and burned them and some Jews were killed. [All this money changer drama had to provide fodder for Charles Dickens novel “A Chritstmas Carol” much later in the 1800s.]

Richard I returning to England introduced a system of registering in duplicate all debts held to money changers to safeguard tax revenue and in 1194 setup a catalogue of all Jewish holdings in England to insure all Jewish owed tax revenues were collected. Since they were not paying much of their taxes the money changers decided to charging higher interest rates to cover the taxes. This increased anger of Christian borrowers and imprisonment was employed to force the money changers to pay. In 1217, Jewish money changers were forced to wear yellow badges for identity and from the start of Henry III’s reign in 1232, life for the money changer deteriorated. 1231, the earl of Leicester barred Jews from taking up residence in the city (Not until January 2001 did Leicester formally lift the 800-year-old ban on Jews). But a couple hundred jewish money changers profited greatly and controlling 33% of the circulated coins in England — an amazing growing monopoly of the money of life. Christian anger grew at the burdens the money changers were imposing. In 1253, a decree was issued forbidding the Jews to live in towns that did not have an established Jewish community. And in 1255, the Jews were once again accused of blood libel as a Christian boy disappeared in a Jewish area and turned up dead 26 days later near a rabbis wedding and the horrors of past Jewish child rituals came to the surface across England and 100 Jews were executed.

1263 During the Barons Wars, money changers were seen as instruments of royal oppression and for three years Jewish community after another was ransacked and many of its inhabitants killed.

1265 the Crown started dealing with Italian bankers, minimizing their dependence on the Jews for financial services.

1269, the Crown prevented Jews from owning land and required all Jewish money at death to go into the Crown’s budget.

1275, Queen Eleanor deported Cambridge’s Jews to nearby Norwich and Edward I issued the Jewish Affairs Bill, forbidding the Jews of England to loan money on interest and since they had no other trade the Jews became poor. The Crown saw taxes and saw no benefit in their presence.

1278, many were arrested and hanged for secretly continuing their money lending.

1290 The Crown did a Full Jewish Expulsion by Edward I from England, making England the first European country to do so. A few (around 4,000) switched religions at least on the surface and managed to remain in England. The Jewish exile from England lasted 360 years.

1494 First evidence of Jews in England after the expulsion under Henry VIII and Edward VI, small numbers of Spanish and Portuguese Fake Christians who worshiped secretly as Jews moved into London and Bristol and they catered to King Henry VIII helping him get a divorce to marry Anne Boleyn. In particular Spanish Jews participated in the slave trade of the 1500s (Created out of Columbus rediscovering America) until the American Civil War using Newport Rhode Island as their headquarters led by a Spanish Jew named Lopez.

1589, Christopher Marlowe’s The Jew of Malta, was first performed. Main character relentlessly plots to maintain and extend his political influence and wealth and betrays and uses race & divide & conquer to do it and it often results in death and lots of tension, intrigue, and plotting. Religious characters include Muslims, Christian, and Jews. The plot is an original story of religious conflict, intrigue, and revenge, set against a backdrop of the struggle for supremacy between Spain and the Ottoman Empire on the island of Malta.

1594, Queen Elizabeth I’s physician, a Spanish Jew named Dr. Roderigo Lopez, was implicated in a plot to assassinate Elizabeth. He was tortured, tried and hanged. Shakespeare followed up with his famous play about a Jewish moneylender, The Merchant of Venice, was first acted out in 1597.

1609, Portuguese merchants (Fake Christians) were expelled from London on suspicion of money changing and fraud.

1640s A new Fake Christian colony of Jews grew in London, many were refugees from Normandy, France.

1649 Jews were allowed to reenter England under Oliver Cromwell who was a plant by Jewish outsiders like Rabbi Menasseh ben Israel of Amsterdam who then moved to London in 1655 and one month after arriving submitted a petition to the Council of State calling for the return of Jews to England.

1655 Cromwell setup the Whitehall Conference of Dec 1655 and did not like the dicussion and angrily dismissed the conference, and then Cromwell authorized the unofficial readmission of the Jews into England. Soon but slowly Jews immigrated to England from Holland, Spain and Portugal and opened a synagogue in 1657.

1664, Charles II issued a formal written promise of protection for the Jews.

1690 Immigrants from German started a synagogue with 400 admitted Jews in London as first Ashkenazis.

1698, the Act for Suppressing Blasphemy granted recognition to the legality of practicing Judaism in England.

1700, William III knighted the first Jew, Solomon de Medina

1734, 6,000 Jews lived in England and high income brokers and foreign traders became known.

1798 Rothschild banksters arrived in Manchester but then moved to London to setup his money changing.

1833, the first Jew was admitted to the Bar and the first Jewish sheriff was appointed in 1835.

1837, Queen Victoria knighted Moses Montefiore.

1841, Isaac Lyon Goldsmid was made baronet, the first Jew to receive a hereditary title.

1881, Russian Jews did a mass immigration from Russia to England and started newspapers, societies and trade unions.

1887 Zionism began in England with the Hovevei Zion movement.

1899 English Zionist Federation was formed and also later the British-Israel Federation.

1909, Herbert Samuel became the first professing Jew to serve in the British cabinet. He later became high commissioner of Palestine, an insider to help destroy Palestine for the Rothschilds created Israel

1914, about 250,000 Jews lived in England.

WW I Jews estimate they lost 10,000.

1917 Jewish Lord Balfour issued the 1917 declaration to Rothschilds officially recognizing the Jews would invade the Palestinians’ homeland and rob the land. Israel’s 1st president, Chaim Weizmann, was British Jew.

1920s Jewish businesses prospered and Jews became lawyers, doctors, dentists and accountants and began taking over Universities.

1930s 90,000 Jews came from Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Poland, Italy

1936 Public Order Act helped control violence against Jews by banning the wearing of political uniforms. Jews raise funds to support settlements in Palestine.

1939 Start of World War II — The Jewish community of Oxford, which had remained small since its founding in 1842, grew with immigrants and evacuees.

1945, a central council for education was founded by the United Synagogue to enhance learning for the Jews.

1950, Jews took over the clothing/fashion trades, pharmaceutical production and light engineering. They moved out of closed Jewish communities into the suburbs.

1950’s support for Israel was spotty and many were against the idea.
