The management apologised for the difficulties, but blamed tourists for the
chaos. Nor was Jiuzhaigou the only destination to suffer from an estimated
20 per cent rise in domestic tourism this year.
More than a million people swarmed onto the shores of West Lake in Hangzhou
while 175,000 people crammed the Forbidden City in Beijing.
In response the government called for “all scenic areas” to “strictly control
crowds, strengthen contingency plans and step up patrols”.
For many Chinese, the two golden week breaks, one in October and one at
Chinese New Year, are their only holidays. But with an increasing proportion
of the country wealthy enough to travel, the country’s most famous tourist
destinations are struggling to cope.
On Tuesday, the government published a 64-page handbook for Chinese tourists
planning to travel abroad, in a bid to improve their behaviour.
